Archaeology

Inside the castle you can visit the Tower of Populonia.  Dating back to the 13th century, it dominates the headland and offers marvellous views over the entire Tuscan archipelago.  Inside the Etruscan museum, on the other hand, you will find artefacts from the excavations of the nearby necropolis.

Not far from the village, you can visit the archaeological park of the acropolis, and that of the necropolis, with its characteristic burial mounds and a small lab for experimental archaeology is in Baratti whilst if you venture along the woodland paths you can search for ancient tombs or visit the ruined monastery of San Quirico.  The Parchi della Val di Cornia SpA (www.parchivaldicornia.com) organizes guided tours of both areas.
